Suzie had a rough start in life. She was born
in a large noisy puppy mill, taken away from her mother at only
five weeks of age, sold to a broker, and finally sold to a large
pet store where she was sold to people who never took her to a
veterinarian. At only eight months old her owners turned her
into a city dog pound. By this point she was timid, fearful,
both her eyes and ears were infected and she had a staph
infection. Despite all this Suzie did well in foster care – her
foster mom said she has a “lovely personality,” she adored the
cat and became very attached to another foster cocker. She loved
to play with her toys. We felt that she had probably been abused
at some point because if a person reached out to pat her she was
fearful, would flatten on the floor and would not move. However,
she did gradually improve and we placed her in a home with
adults and one teenager. Suzie became very attached to the mom
but she was fearful of strangers who came to the home and she
was not reliably housebroken. After two months Suzie’s adopters
returned her to cocker rescue. She adjusted quickly to being
back at her foster home. She enjoys routine, structure, and
predictability. She likes the company of other dogs and loves to
play with all the squeaky toys, and as her foster mom says,
“carries her toy with pride.” We also discovered that Suzie has
a food allergy. Her Special ZD diet has made a real difference.
Her skin is better and she no longer has bouts with diarrhea.
While she’s doing much better she is still not 100% housebroken.
She can have episodes of seasonal allergies and needs a weekly
bath and ear cleaning during that time. We’ve decided to try
again and see if we can find the right adult only home for
Suzie. She seems to get security from, and enjoys the
companionship of another pet (either cat or dog). Suzie needs a
quiet structured home environment with understanding owners who
can accommodate her special needs. We realize that it may not be
easy to find just the right “forever home” for Suzie, but for
her sake it’s worth the try.
