Wuppie
and Tyke: These two-year-old brothers love each
other, love everyone they meet and think life in general is just
great! They are the happiest and funniest cockers anyone could
ever hope to meet. In fact, their caregiver said recently
they’re the best cockers he’s ever met – and he’s an
enthusiastic admirer of labrador retrievers. Both Tyke and Wuppie love to play with toys
– Tyke his ball and Wuppie is very fond of his squishy toy and
both would play for hours with people if they could. Their
previous owner said when it was time for them to go in their
crates they would play the “dead dog” game – roll on their backs
and put all four paws in the air! Type and Wuppie think older
kids are lots of fun and they would like to play endlessly with
children in a fenced in yard.

Gracie and Toby:
This half brother and sister pair are
wonderful cockers! They have been loved and well socialized –
consequently they adore everyone. Five year old Toby is the more
laid back, easy going cocker. His owners describe him as “a
lovable goofy dog” who really just wants to be a lap dog. He
greets strangers with a happy wiggle and then he goes and lays
down on him bed. He doesn’t like to be left alone and cries at
first, but after two or three minutes settles down and naps.
Toby is very sensitive to his owners feelings – he really is a
gentle loving soul. Four and a half year old Gracie is the more
energetic and excuberant of the two. She is very playful and
prances like a colt when playing with her toys. Read

Oreo:
This smart friendly cocker is true “Sea Dog!” For the
past six years, Oreo has been a devoted companion to his dad who
is a commercial fisherman. Oreo loves to go to sea for weeklong
fishing trips where he could be with his dad all day every day –
(every cockers’ dream come true).
Two years ago, Oreo lost the sight in one eye but despite this,
he was able to safely to get around the boat he knew so well.
But last week, Oreo had a sudden episode of glaucoma and lost
the sight in his good eye.

Abby:
It
is just so hard to understand how after 12 years Abby’s owners
could take her to a shelter because they have no time to care
for her. She arrived badly matted and flea infested but she’s
been shaved and bathed and feels sooo much better. Her
caregivers say she is just the sweetest girl and smart too.
Abby is very easy to care for and enjoys naptime. Like
most cockers at this age, she is a bit deaf, but otherwise very
healthy.

Bailey:
Bailey’s owner loves him very much but because of her own health
issues she can no longer care for him. She describes four-year
old Bailey as affectionate and playful. He loves his favorite
toys and always keeps them nearby. He likes to play catch. He
enjoys having his ears scratched and especially likes “baby
talk.” He is housebroken and crate trained and he currently
lives with another dog. Bailey’s vet says that despite his
seasonal allergies “he’s an exceptionally nice cocker,
adorable.” Bailey has been diagnosed with inhalant allergies but
his vet said she’s “seen a lot worse.” His skin problems occur
mostly in summer and fall.

Suzie's
story:
Suzie had a rough start in life. She was born in a large noisy
puppy mill, taken away from her mother at only five weeks of
age, sold to a broker, and finally sold to a large pet store
where she was sold to people who never took her to a
veterinarian. At only eight months old her owners turned her
into a city dog pound. By this point she was timid, fearful,
both her eyes and ears were infected and she had a staph
infection. Despite all this Suzie did well in foster care – her
foster mom said she has a “lovely personality,” she adored the
cat and became very attached to another foster cocker. She loved
to play with her toys. We felt that she had probably been abused
at some point because if a person reached out to pat her she was
fearful, would flatten on the floor and would not move. However,
she did gradually improve and we placed her in a home with
adults and one teenager. Suzie became very attached to the mom
but she was fearful of strangers who came to the home and she
was not reliably housebroken. After two months Suzie’s adopters
returned her to cocker rescue. She adjusted quickly to being
back at her foster home. She enjoys routine, structure, and
predictability. Read more... |

Buddy (2):
This young, happy tiny cocker must have been left in
a crate almost all the time. When our volunteer picked him up
at the city pound, she couldn't believe her eyes - the huge
matts on both his ears were almost as big as he is, his fur was
stained yellow and he just reeked of urine. Despite all this,
our volunteer said "he's one happy camper" and thrilled to be
out of a cage..

Crystal:
This petite six-year-old cocker miss weighs about
14 pounds and she’s all wiggles! She is a happy girl who just
loves meeting new people. Her foster mom says she is a “very
sweet cocker.” Crystal likes to go for rides in the car and she
is easy to leash walk. She settled right into her foster home
and is fine with the other dogs. She would be the perfect dog
for someone who is home a lot and wants a small easy to care for
cocker companion.

Freckles:
Freckles is a very lucky cocker – three weeks ago
he was attacked by a much larger dog but thanks to quick
thinking on the part of several adults he was freed and rushed
to an emergency vet hospital. He had several deep puncture
wounds but thankfully he responded very well to immediate
treatment, healed quickly, and his stitches have been removed.
This very sweet six year old boy doesn’t appear to have suffered
any emotional damage from this trauma.

Dempsey:
This little guy is only about 7-8 months
old and he’s a real charmer. His foster mom says he loves to be
held and cuddled – she says he’s exceptionally well behaved for
his age. Dempsey is very attention to people – he listens well
and is eager to please, however when he is outside he transforms
into a beagle and puts his nose to the ground and will follow a
scent wherever it leads.

Jenna:
This mother cocker and her pups got off to a very rough start in
life. Jenna (the mother) and an adult male cocker were left
outside day and night in a ramshackle pen with no shade or
water. When the neighbors complained about the barking, the
owner put the 2 dogs in his basement and they were never again
let outside or allowed in the house. Jenna got pregnant and
gave birth to her pups in the filthy, dark basement where they
remained for 6 months until one of the neighbors became aware of
the situation and persuaded the owner to give him all the dogs
and then called the Animal Control Officer who immediately
called us.

Princess:
This utterly sweet little 8 year old cocker girl was hit by
a car on February 3rd and suffered a fractured jaw and
lacerations in her mouth. The Animal Control Officer called
us immediately and we rushed her to veterinary specialist
who was able to get her right into surgery and repaired the
damage. Princess tolerated the surgery well and by the next
day, she was wagging her tail at all the vet techs and
eating her gruel. Our vet was very impressed with her
temperament and pronounced her a "very sweet dog".

Lucky:
This 4 ½ year old boy has received a five star rating from both
the animal control officer who picked him up and his foster mom
who says ”He is wonderful with people.” Lucky just loves
to be outside in a big front yard – he is very interested in the
squirrels and birds at the feeder and probably would not do well
in a home with kitties.

Duchess:
Duchess and her cocker buddy, Duke, lived alone in a shed
for over 3 years with no vet or grooming care and almost no
human companionship. When we rescued them in May 2007, they
were in deplorable condition--filthy, covered with ticks and
could barely stand due to the tangle of fur and mats all over
their body. But despite this misery, those dogs never lost
their friendly temperments and their stumpy tails have wagged
non-stop ever since. Read More... |

Absolutely everyone who has met Shorty has fallen in love with
him! The shelter manager, the foster Mom,
and our vet all agree, he is a sweet, affectionate, "honey bun";
despite the fact that he has endured significant pain and
discomfort for well over a year. Shorty was diagonosed with
glaucoma in his left eye. His previous owner never treated him
for this painful condition and now his eye is inflamed and

Murphy - A
Special Cocker who Needs a Home ASAP!!
Murphy is now in foster care
with CSRNE – he’s a happy, healthy, active cocker.
Read update 3/15/08 Despite his condition (mega esophagus) he’s really not a
special needs dog. He simply needs to eat three small meals
a day and his food bowl is elevated on a small stepping
stool or bench. His dry kibble food needs to be soaked in
water until it’s mushy then pureed in a food processor or
blender until creamy. His foster care giver makes up 2-3
days of food at a time. He does not require canned food.
Murphy is a small, very adorable cocker with his little
round head, short muzzle and compact body. He is
housebroken and loves to play outside in the fenced year.
He is very fond of his toys and likes to play fetch. Murphy
is perfect in a car and loves to go for long rides.Read

Toby is a big, classically handsome cocker spaniel. The
volunteers call him “Goofy” because he loves to stretch out full
length in the “froggy-dog” position on grass and even snow. He
enjoys having his belly rubbed and takes great pleasure in relaxing
on the park bench with the volunteers. His special friend is
Big Buddy,
and they will play endlessly together in the play yard.

This small, very adorable cocker boy was left in his crate and
abandoned outside the door of the animal shelter. The Animal
Control Officer found him the next morning huddled in the back
of his crate, terrified and shaking. She took him to her home
and soon learned that Joey (aka Jo-Jo) was hand shy and very
afraid of men. However, he quickly warms up to women and likes
her children.

When
Chauncey
came into Cocker Rescue, he was in deplorable condition. He was
very thin, infested with hookworms and so severely matted that
he could barely walk. As you can see, underneath all of this is
a very beautiful 5 year old cocker. While Chauncey was
recuperating at the kennel, he was affectionate and playful with
his caregivers however, when he was adopted into a home it
became apparent that he had been abused by men and teenage boys.

PLEASE NOTE: Because the
rescue cockers are
Second Hand Dogs and have not had the benefit of
having bonded with their new family since puppy hood and because
we usually have no history on whether or not the rescue dogs were
socialized around young children, CSRNE has decided that we
cannot adopt to families with children under the age of 7 years.
We realize that this policy may rule out some homes that would
otherwise be wonderful but our first priority must be the safety
of children.
Please take time to read CSRNE's
Adoption Procedures and about the
Restraint Policy. We hope they will answer your questions
about how CSRNE's adoption process works.
