Update 3/15/08
Murphy’s foster mom
reports that Murphy just loves to eat! She has taught him to sit
and wait until his food bowl is placed on his stool; he gobbles
up his food and then flings his bowl across his kennel area.
Murphy is now fed softened food twice a day and he is doing
well on this schedule. Murphy simply loves to be outside in the
big fenced in play yard for as long as possible and he can dig
very big holes! He would be fine as an only cocker or he would
be okay with another easy going, laid back dog. His foster mom
says he is a nosy, busy boy and he wants to check out what
another dog is doing or playing with. This behavior could be
annoying to a more assertive dog.
UPDATE:
9/9/07
Murphy is now in foster
care with CSRNE – he’s a happy, healthy, active cocker.
Despite his condition (mega esophagus) he’s really not a special
needs dog. He simply needs to eat three small meals a day and his
food bowl is elevated on a small stepping stool or bench. His dry
kibble food needs to be soaked in water until it’s mushy then
pureed in a food processor or blender until creamy. His foster
care giver makes up 2-3 days of food at a time. He does not
require canned food. Murphy is a small, very adorable cocker with
his little round head, short muzzle and compact body. He is
housebroken and loves to play outside in the fenced year. He is
very fond of his toys and likes to play fetch. Murphy is perfect
in a car and loves to go for long rides.

Murphy's temporary foster mom reports
that he's very happy to be out of the city shelter and
he's adjusting very well - he even likes the 3 bossy female
cockers who also live there! His foster mom says he
has a great personality, is friendly and just loves his
ball and other toys. She also reports that his
feeding requirements are easy to manage. She simply softens
several cups of dry dog food with water until it's mushy,
then she purees it in a blender. He gets about half a
cup of the blended food placed on a 9 inch high stool.
He was famished when he first arrived last Friday so she's
been feeding him 6 small meals a day but he's now more
relaxed about getting his food and she plans to work him
down to 3 meals a day.
Murphy just loves being outside in the
big fenced yard. We're hoping there's a special
person just waiting for this happy boy.
Murphy is a smart, affectionate 2 year old who was taken
recently by his owners to a city shelter. He's got lots of
energy and personality and he loves to learn new tricks - he knows
how to lay down, roll over and give paw. He loves meeting
new people, adores going for car rides and playing ball games.
We've spoken to several vets who have said, that with proper care,
their patients with mega esophagus have good quality of life and
can live a normal life span.
